Q: What is the difference between academic advisement and major advisement:
A: The academic advisement team can determine if credits from another institution are equivalent to courses at John Jay College. The major advisor can help you chart out your entire academic plan. This is especially true for the courses you will need to take that fall outside of the description of “general education”.
Q: This is my first semester at John Jay, when should I schedule an appointment with the major advisor?
A: As soon as possible. The major advisor will work with you to design your academic plan. If this is done early, you can avoid headaches down the road.
Q: I am a transfer student, and this is my first semester at John Jay. When should I schedule an appointment with the major advisor?
A: The best time to meet with your major advisor is AFTER you have met with someone at the Academic Advisement Center.
